Paul Klee described sketches as a memory of a memory and I like that. And I think it was Monet who said that when one looks casually at a bowl of grapes one doesn't see each individual grape, instead one sees a grape-bunch. For this reason painting individual grapes is not likely to produce a convincing looking grape-bunch. In that sense, sketching is filling in just enough of an idea so the mind can remember the rest with little effort. I will always be fascinated by the trick the mind plays on itself -first in the scribbling and second in the viewing; to imagine things from our tangible world from bits of line and color on paper -or in wisps of clouds, ripples of water, or dirt on floors. I think Paul Jenkins described it most succinctly as "indirection", whereby the act of putting marks on canvas triggers powerfull images in the mind. The last ramble I'll make about that is the widely theorized possibility that primal images may be bridged on through generations aside from an historical record; passed from mother to babe. This would help explain why certain visual forms like segmented insect bodies or spider's segmented legs can have such a strong effect on so many people, including pre-experience babies, and how raptor silhouettes are recognized and feared by even newly hatched bird chicks (though I can't site the specific studies claiming so).
